Immediately after acquiring SP Bernie Alvarez From the Boise A's, Boston Beaneaters management has come to an agreement for a contract extension. Sources close to the team reveal that the contract extension is for four years and is valued at $48 million, bringing the 30-year-old ace's five-year contract to $59.5 million.
Alvarez was acquired as part of a four-player deal which saw reigning AL Rookie of the Year and Home Run Derby champion Valerio Pizzaro go to Boise, alongside SP prospects Carlos Castro and Taylor Middlebrook.
Last season, Alvarez went 18-9 with a 4.34 ERA, and was among the league leaders in strikeouts (221). Alvarez is expected to make his first spring training start for Boston within the next four days.
Alvarez joins a revamped Beaneaters rotation that includes offseason additions of John Nakamura and Dion Adams. Alvarez's arrival has also moved previous 5th starter B.C. Javier to long relief, where Beaneaters management feels he will be better suited. Only Benny Truman and Darren Becker are holdovers from the Beaneaters' starting rotation in season one.
On the offensive side, Boston will also unveil three new position players come opening day: catcher Lawrence Neal and first-baseman Oswaldo Navarro are expected to anchor a young lineup, with 29-year-old 2B Billy Leonard replacing Joe Warden in the infield. The Beaneaters' GM has stressed that Warden could see significant time in the outfield, however, and a strict utility role is not expected at this time.
