With the San Francisco Seals having to deal with some major payroll issues this season, it appears that the team is looking to keep some salary cap space open for perhaps making a big splash in the Free Agent market. Tony Stone's agent told me earlier in the day that a pitcher of Stone's caliber deserves a pay raise, while sources within the Seals organization have informed me that they're not so fond of giving big cash to a 34 year old pitcher no matter how much he contributed last season.
The issue with this whole dispute is that the Seals really can't afford to lose him as he put up some of the top records and ERA in the AL. They do not have an exceptionally strong rotation if you take Stone out of the equation, which leads one to believe they'll likely fight pretty hard to keep him now that he's hit the free agent market. After all, if you're in a division with great offense like the AL West you need all the pitching you can get. The Seals were able to ride their pitching into a solid run through the playoffs and took the Boston Beaneaters to a fifth game. If they're to improve upon last season, keeping Tony Stone would be a good stepping stone towards that goal.
