One of the early surprises of season 3 has been the torrid pace the Toledo Maumees have set to open up a 4-game lead in the NL East, leaving in their wake the two teams that finished ahead of the 91-win Maumees in season two: powerhouse Durham Tobacconists (6-5) and playoff hopeful Tampa Bay Seminoles (4-7).
The Maumees, now in the midst of a 7-game win streak, are now entering rarefied air with a pitching staff that has allowed 19 runs in 11 games. The Maumees have four starters who are pitching like Cy Young candidates thus far: Bert Blair, Junior Cerveza, John Cooper, and Leon Haynes all have at least 2 wins to start the season, with only Blair posting an ERA above 1.00.
The Maumees' wide divisional lead comes as a surprise to most DD observers, who had Durham pegged as the division favorite with Toledo and Tampa Bay close behind. Yet even at this early segment of the season, Double Day's best division once again claims the team with the best record in baseball.
