Since season 1 of Doubleday the draft classes have had little talent. That was until season 4 happened. Probably the most stacked draft this world will see for a while.. The world was short on good Shortstops with big bats and that has now changed. In a few seasons some of these guys will be replacing what we now know.. In this draft we have 3 guys that will potentially rival Phillip Maxwell, Valerio Pizzaro and many others as the best hitters in the world. Yes, unproven still but these guys have some serious potential. We will go over each team's first round pick and decide whether they were a draft winner or a draft bust.
1st overall: Quilvio Javier (2B)- Javier was drafted 1st overall by Pittsburgh. However Javier has not decided to sign just yet. He is still in negotiations with owner mjmage.. Starting demands of around a $4,000,000.00 bonus are just that.. Javier, if signed will potentially be the best hitter Doubleday has ever seen once hitting the ML level.. We will continue to monitor the situation but as of right now Pittsburgh may end up with a comp pick next season. Result: Great pick unfortunately it was very risky.
2nd: Lee Benjamin (SS)- The first of a few good Shortstops in this draft, Benjamin drafted and signed by Seattle makes him the 2nd highest paid rookie in the draft. At 19 years old Benjamin has plenty of time to grow into what scouts are predicting to be a monster SS. I personally see his defense to be lower then the other 2 top SS's in the draft but Benjamin's bat may just make up for it. Result: Great Pick
3rd: Aaron Tracy (1B)- Tracy a 1B out of Florida received the biggest bonus of all draft picks. Signed by Austin Tracy, potentially the best hitter in the draft has some serious power combined with a great eye and very good contact. When watching him the scouts say that he rates higher then Philip Maxwell among world 1B's. At the moment Tracy is in the LOW A level but I'm sure in about 3 seasons we will see him slugging 50+ HR's a year during his first ML season. Future Rookie of the year right here everyone. Result: Great signing
4th: Vic Aguilar (SP)- Aguilar signed by Monterrey at the 4th pick was too early for this pitcher. Aguilar has barely average control to go along with his amazing splits and great pitches. With the SS's on the table I think this pick was not the best pick that could've happened.. However let's talk about Aguilar..Drafted out of Atwood, KS he seems to be a Graham Langston type Pitcher.. So Monterrey really didn't hurt themselves.. Result: Good Signing/Wrong time
5th: Corban George (2B)- Anaheim drafted him at the 5th pick.. Not enough information on this guy to make a determination just yet.. Anaheim has yet to sign him.
More picks will be evaluated today and tonight.
