The Monterrey Gray Ghosts won the sweepstakes for International Free Agent SP Karim Bennett today, shelling out a reported $21.7 million for the lefthander.

Bennett joins Jorge Melendez ($19.0 million) as the two most expensive IFA signings of season three - coincidentally, both were signed by Monterrey, who have now spent an astounding $41.9 million on prospects. Monterrey's spending has stirred up conversation amongst Double Day GMs, but most seem to agree that Bennett is an elite-level talent: "he's worth it," one GM said.

Bennett is touted by scouts as a young starter with ace-like stuff and Cy Young-caliber talent. The 21-year-old boasts strong control and two ML-level pitches and is set to make his pitching debut in AA. He's durable, with no history of health problems. Best of all, he gives Monterrey yet another great young starter to groom for future seasons.

Bennett's signing comes on the heels of an active amateur draft, in which teams begin to commit prospect payroll to draftees.

Bennett will be paid the rookie-level salary of $327,000 for this season.
